Mental health and gambling behavior in Uruguay: An analysis of prevalence and subjective well-being
Abstract
The objective of this research was to study the prevalence of pathological gambling in post-pandemic adults and analyze the link with psychopathological factors and well-being. It was a correlational study, with a non-experimental cross-sectional design. The sample comprised 11,637 adults between 18 and 65 years old (M=32.51) who participated during the first year after the end of the pandemic. Psychopathological syndromes, levels of subjective psychological well-being and indicators of pathological gambling were evaluated. Positive correlations were found between psychopathological factors in anxiety-depression, antisocial behavior and stress, linked to the risk of pathological gambling. Resilience and prosociality showed an inverse correlation with pathological gambling. The prevalence of pathological gambling in the post-pandemic increased comparison to previous research – from 1.9 to 3.2%. The self-reported emotional assessment during the pandemic indicated a predominance of anxiety and instability. The dimensions of psychological well-being indicated correlations with the risk of pathological gambling, such that the lower the risk of pathological gambling, the higher the well-being score. The levels of anxiety-depression correlated positively with the risk of pathological gambling and resilience-prosociality, which turned out to be indicators of protection. It is important to continue studying the increase in the risk of pathological gambling and the protective factors that contribute to intervention and/or prevention programs.
