Conflicts and ethical consequences of emotional labor: Implications for industrial/organizational psychology
Abstract
The study of emotional labor (EL) has gained relevance in the last four decades. Nonetheless, the field of Industrial/Organizational Psychology (IOP) has given little attention to this phenomenon from an organizational conflict and ethical perspective. Therefore, the aim of this article is to reflect on EL and the conflicts and consequences that it may give rise to. To fulfill these objectives, we conducted a critical review of the literature on three thematic axes: (1) emotional labor, (2) EL and organizational conflicts, and (3) ethical consequences involved in EL in relation to IOP. Among the results, we identify and discuss conflicts that arise from EL on three levels: individual, organizational, and social. We also elaborate a theoretical framework that integrates propositions by three authors on EL, as well as the identified levels of conflicts and potential consequences. Finally, we problematize the EL in the current socioeconomic system and the role of Industrial/Organizational Psychologists. We conclude that it is our responsibility as I/O Psychologists to question EL and its ethical consequences, as well as identifying alternatives that contribute to the prevention and attention of conflicts generated by EL.
