Resumen

Motivational differences for extramarital sex among Puerto Rican men and women were investigated. A sample of 41 married and co-habiting subjects undergoing individual or couples therapy due to conflict over one or more extramarital sexual liaisons were querstioned about the motivations for their affairs. Part of Annette Lawson's (1998) questionnaire on adultery was modified, translated to Spanish, and administered by the primary therapist of each subject vounteer. Male and female responses were generally more similar than dissimilar, although significant differences were found in the role played by emotional and sexual components in the motivation to seek and maintain extramarital relations. Awareness of differing motivations for extramarital relationship is important for the establishment of therapeutic goals and for therapy outcome.
